An edited version of the provisional Classic FAI rules (Ian's version of the Australian rules re-jigged to fit the NZMAA rule-book format and make it easier to follow). They were on the original forum, but that got deleted when the forum was replaced. References to Section 4 rules are with regard to the main MFNZ CL rule book, which can be seen here: http://www.modelflyingnz.org/Docs/Gerenal/S03-CL.pdf

Australian Classic FAI rules in a standalone format compatible with NZMAA TR rules

10.1 Classic FAI Team Race

10.1.1 The aim of Classic FAI Team Race is to re-create team racing as it was before 1970, flown over grass at speeds most people can cope with. The rules are inspired by the 1968 FAI Team Race rules with adjustments to suit current NZ team racing practice and the spirit of Classic team racing. The rules are intended to reasonably match similar events in other countries to allow international competition.

10.1.2 All general rules in Section 4 – Control Line Team Racing General Rules apply except where specified here. (The format of these rules is designed for compatibility with existing NZ team race rules and to ease inclusion as an official event in future.)

10.2 The Course.

10.2.1 A Classic Team Race site is a short-mown grass or hard surface marked as per 4.2.1

10.2.2 The Flight Circle Radii are:

1) Classic FAI - 19.6 metres

10.2.3 Races will be conducted over the following distances:

Class - Heat - Final
Classic FAI - 100 laps (10km) - 200 Laps (20km)

10.3 General Specifications.

10.3.1 The general specifications given in 4.3 apply.

10.3.2 Load test: Before every race a pull test shall be applied to the assembled control lines and model, equal to: -

Class - Pull Test
Classic FAI - 20 times the model weight

10.4 Racing Rules.

10.4.1 Races will be conducted as per the NZ team race rules given in sections 4.4, 4.5, 4.6, 4.7, 4.8 and 4.9.

10.4.2 National records and NDC will not apply until this class is ratified as official.

10.6 Classic FAI Specifications

10.6.1 The model must be of a semi-scale type with general lines similar to those of a full-size aircraft with a separate wing and tailplane, a cockpit or canopy with pilot and enclosed engine/tank. The model should have been designed prior to 1970 or must conform to the dimensions, style and spirit typical of racing models of that era.

10.6.2 Retractable undercarriages are not permitted. Monowheel undercarriages are permitted

10.6.3 Squeeze bottle refuelling only. The tank complete with all connecting tubes must be accessible. The use of multi-function filler valves is not permitted. A single function valve is permitted.

10.6.4 An effective engine-stopping device is recommended but is not compulsory.

10.6.5 Propellers are limited to commercially available nylon or glass-filled nylon propellers.

10.6.6 Motor Capacity: 0 to 2.5cc

10.6.7 Engines are limited to the following:
· Fora Junior or Pioneer
· Oliver Tiger (any model up to Mk4, original or copy, including Rothwell R250)
· ST G20 D
· ST G20/15RV D
· MVVS (any front induction)
· ETA 15
· TAIPAN (up to Series 13)
· Parra 2.5,
· KMD
· Enya 15D (any model)
. Any other engine in use prior to 1970

Other engines may be approved upon request.

10.6.8 Modifications to engines are permitted other than:
· Conversion to Schnuerle porting
· Internal modifications to Schnuerle ported models

10.6.1 Maximum fuel capacity:
· 10cc with no compulsory pitstops, or
· Unlimited with two compulsory pitstops (NZ Classic A models with non-Schnuerle ported engines only).

10.6.9 Minimum projected area of wing and tailplane (including the area inside the fuselage): 12 sq. dm.

10.6.10 Minimum wheel diameter: 25mm

10.6.11 Minimum line diameter:
· 0.30mm (solid wire)
· 0.38mm (stranded wire)

NZ Classic A and Classic B Team Race rules in a revised format to make it easier to follow and fit into the main racing rule-book.

Remember - Classic A is different to Classic FAI and is the one flown at the Nationals.

Existing Classic TR rules in a format compatible with the official NZMAA TR rules.

10.1 Classic Team Race

10.1.1 Classic Team Race is an unofficial event, using low-tech machinery and models, or look-alike models of the ‘50s and ‘60s and even early ‘70s era, which are flown over grass.

10.1.2 All general rules in Section 4 – Control Line Team Racing General Rules apply except where specified here. The format of these rules is designed for compatibility with existing NZ team race rules and to ease inclusion as an official event in future.

10.2 The Course.

10.2.1 A Classic Team Race site is a short-mown grass surface marked as per 4.2.1

10.2.2 The Flight Circle Radii are:

1) Classic A - 19.6 metres
2) Classic B - 21.4 metres

10.2.3 Races will be conducted over the following distances:

Class - Heat - Final
Classic A - 100 laps (10km) - 200 Laps (20km)
Classic B - 90 laps (10km) - 180 laps (20km)

10.3 General Specifications.

10.3.1 The general specifications given in 4.3 apply except the following:

10.3.2 Undercarriages: One or two wheels may be used.

10.3.3 Load test: Before every race a pull test shall be applied to the assembled control lines and model, equal to: -

Class - Pull Test
Classic A - 20 times the model weight
Classic B - 20 times the model weight

10.3.4 Refuelling: By squeeze bottle only.

10.3.5 Propellers: Mass produced, readily available over the counter in NZ models shops

10.3.6 Cut-outs: May be fitted but used in emergencies only (an engine fry-up is and emergency). Disqualified if used otherwise

10.3.7 Motors: Must be non-Schnuerle-ported.

10.3.8 Heats faster than five minutes are not in the spirit of Classic Team Race and those breaking five minutes will be penalised one second for each second below five minutes. Example: 4:45.00 will be recorded as 5:15.00.

10.4 Racing Rules.

10.4.1 Races will be conducted as per the NZ team race rules given in sections 4.4, 4.5, 4.6, 4.7, 4.8 and 4.9.

10.4.2 National records and NDC will not apply until this class is ratified as official.

10.6 Classic A Specifications

10.6.1 Motor Capacity: 0 to 2.5cc

10.6.2 Maximum fuel capacity: Unrestricted but the model must make at least two pitstops in 100 laps and five stops in 200 laps.

10.6.3 Minimum wheel diameter: 38mm

10.6.4 Minimum line diameter: 0.35mm

10.6.5 Maximum weight: 800g

10.7.3 Minimum wheel diameter: 50mm

10.7.4 Minimum line diameter: 0.40mm

10.7.5 Maximum weight: 900g

People who are interested in Classic B Team Race, but who can't find a suitable engine should contact me. I have a couple of spares that I'm setting up for racing and I'll sell them ONLY to people who will USE them in Classic B TR contests and have started building a model.

I can also supply lines, plans, some materials and assorted other bits and pieces.
